CAPTURED RUSSIAN ARTILLERY SHELL CASING
Fired by Russian forces on the battlefield and captured by Ukraine, this casing is marked by the powerful imagery of the Ukrainian trident, a national symbol deeply rooted in the nation’s history. The trident, or "Tryzub," signifies unity, freedom, and independence. This symbol was used as Ukraine's coat of arms during the Ukrainian War of Independence (1917-1921) and was officially adopted in 1918. It has evolved into a symbol of national pride. Its origins trace back to ancient times, with early depictions found on cultural monuments from the first century AD, representing the enduring strength of the Ukrainian spirit.
Additionally, elements of vyshyvanka embroidery—traditional Ukrainian shirts adorned with intricate patterns—can be seen etched or painted on the casing. These motifs, which date back to Pagan times, reflect the deep connection to nature and spirituality in Ukrainian culture. Each pattern tells a story, preserving the beliefs and heritage of generations past.
This shell casing serves not only as a remnant of warfare but also as a testament to Ukraine’s fight for self-determination. It symbolizes the courage of those who stand against oppression and the enduring legacy of Ukrainian cultural identity. In capturing this shell casing, we capture a fragment of history—a symbol of resilience that echoes the voices of those who have fought for their homeland.

FRAMED AMERICAN FLAG

Generously donated by Green Beret MAJ Nick Dockery, this particular flag holds both personal and historical significance. In 2018, he purchased 18 flags to fly in Afghanistan on the 17th anniversary of 9/11. This flag was first flown over Afghanistan on September 18th, 2018, for 9 minutes and 11 seconds atop Camp Cathcart in Mazar-e-Sharif, Balkh Province.
Over the following six months, this flag accompanied Major Nick Dockery on dozens of operations, traveling thousands of kilometers across Balkh, Jowzjan, and Faryab provinces. It was fixed to the back of his armored vehicle, enduring the challenges of countless firefights with Taliban forces in austere terrain. This flag was carried aboard AH-64 Apache helicopters, providing air support for his Special Forces detachment.
On October 18th, during one of those operations, both his Joint Terminal Attack Controller Cody Smith (the 2019 Military Times Airman of the Year and a fellow Silver Star recipient) and Nick were wounded together, and this flag was flying on the back of their vehicle when an enemy mortar round hit the back of the truck (presumably some of the shrapnel ripped through part of the flag). The flag has seen its share of combat, showing weathering, including bullet holes and other damage likely caused by debris from Taliban fire.
This flag symbolizes resilience, sacrifice, and the commitment of our forces during that pivotal deployment.

GOLD STAR – STEVE ALPERT PAINTING
Gold Star was born out of respect and caring for Gold Star families who all share a very specific trauma, the loss of a cherished family member. In this painting, is the pain and sorrow, and the respect to honor those who have suffered such a loss. This painting has a job to do, to assist Gold Star daughters and sons to attend college. An investment in America as COL Jacobs always says.
The flag at half-staff, the image within the image was an idea that captivated the artist and serves as the ultimate reminder. The gold star in the star field seems to be in dialogue with the flag at half-staff. They talk to each other. The overall effect of the painting says, “Remember Us.”
The storytelling of Gold Star is solemn and carries powerful emotion. It says, we remember, we care, we share the pain of all Gold Star family members, and most of all we honor the loss, and that we support those left behind. It is all of that. That a piece of art can serve to transform someone’s life is a truly wonderful thing.
