PREPARING FOR COLLEGE OVER THE SUMMER

Jul 10, 2016

Summer is here and we know we have many scholars already making preparations to take the next big step in their life. As classes approach, it is important to make a list of all the things that need to be done before making the big move.

Buy textbooks early – It’s easy to wait until the last minute to start buying textbooks, but most students will be making this same mistake. The best way to avoid sold out textbooks and backorders is to order them with plenty of time to spare. Some good sites for buying cheaper textbooks and rentals include Chegg and Amazon

Buy new supplies – Students should make a list of supplies they will most likely need and buy new ones. Chances are they already have a lot of these items, but it is always best to have a fresh start.

Check classes online for assignments – Students should give themselves plenty of time to check if any classes already have assignments posted. The more time they allow themselves, the faster they can get their tasks completed.

Spend time with family – It is important for our scholars to make the most of the time they have left before they embark on their college journey. The more time made to spend with loved ones before the move, the less homesickness students are bound to feel.

Make a list of dorm room essentials – Students should make a list of things needed and check the items off as they go along.

Get to know roommates early – Moving in with a person a scholar is not familiar with can be hard enough.  Students should make sure to contact their roommate(s) with plenty of time and get to know him/her. That way the transition to college living will be smoother for everyone.

Get familiarized – It is important that students plan a trip to familiarize themselves with their campus. A good idea would be for them to bring their schedule with them and practice going to each of their classes.  While there, they can research any clubs/organizations that may be of interest to them as well. It’s never too early to start forming a new college routine!

Through the generous support of our partners, Fallen Patriots has helped over 630 surviving children prepare for college. It is our duty to continue ensuring a future for the children of the fallen. We wish good luck to all of our scholars who are preparing to take this next step in their lives.
