Savannah B. is the daughter of Army LTC David B., who passed away in 2015. Savannah is currently studying Portuguese at the United States Military Academy.
Savannah shares, "This May, I am graduating from West Point, a school my father graduated from 35 years ago. I know he never would have wanted me to experience the hardships that he once faced at West Point, let alone the hardships I will face in the future as an officer of the United States Army, but I know he is proud. My father's service and love for the Army inspired me to go to West Point. There is no greater sacrifice than to lay down your life for your country. My father did great things in the Army and I hope to someday be of the same caliber that he was."
Regarding her father, Savannah shares, "My father was the most patient, loving, and happy person. He was a hard worker who valued integrity like I had never seen. At a young age, he made sure to teach my sister and me about integrity. He always did the right thing and owned up for his mistakes. My father was passionate about church, loving his family, and doing what's right.”
Savannah will graduate this May with a degree in Portuguese and hopes to branch aviation and be an apache pilot for the Army. In addition, she hopes to become a Foreign Area Officer (FAO) and work at an embassy overseas. Savannah shares that her inspiration to choose this field comes from studying Spanish her whole life. "I studied Spanish for 13 years, from kindergarten to the beginning of college. Being fluent in Spanish, I wanted to learn a new language. I chose Portuguese because I love the Latin American culture and I knew it would be fairly easy to pick up given my background in Spanish. I love the language and culture of Brazil."
Savannah shares that receiving a scholarship helped her pay for books for school. “In addition, my mom was able to use the money to pay for my sister's college tuition. Having this financial aid has helped my family tremendously. Being a full-time student and athlete, not having to worry about money is a blessing," Savannah said.
There are approximately 25,000 military who have lost an active duty parent in the military over the last 35 years. The vision of Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation is to ensure that every such child receives all necessary college funding.
