Fallen Patriots scholar Miryam S. is the daughter of Navy SCPO Eduardo S., who passed away in 2016. Miryam is currently a freshman at American University in Washington D.C. where she is majoring in International Studies. When explaining why she chose her field, she shares “I decided to major in international studies and join American University’s School of International Service to learn more about language, culture, and extensive ways to solve global issues. I wish to leave an impact on the world and collaborate with others to mitigate the effects of climate change.”
Miryam was recently accepted into American University’s Peace Corp Prep Program which will help her fulfill her career goal of becoming a Peace Corp volunteer so she can help others throughout the world. When explaining the impact that Fallen Patriots has had on her life, Miryam shares “Fallen Patriots has substantially assisted me, before and during my college journey by providing financial aid for my SAT prep classes and books, paying for AP test fees, money for a laptop, and stipend for college expenditures.”
When asked what she thinks her father would be most proud of her for, Miryam shares “My father would have been most proud that I was awarded 2020 Navy Military Child of the Year. The meaning of the award itself encompasses all my high school achievements, as well as my resilience to my father’s suicide. I can imagine him watching over me from heaven and being glad that I persevered…”
Miryam gives advice to other students that are going through a similar experience. “I would advise students to take chances, get involved, and be confident. For those who have lost a loved one, I would advise them to persevere. Surrounding yourself with people who support you is very important. It is important to share your feelings with those you trust and seek help when you need it.”
There are approximately 25,000 children who have lost an active-duty parent in the military over the last 35 years. The vision of Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation is to ensure that every such children receives all necessary college funding.
