Why You Should Study Abroad During College
Studying abroad is one of the most exciting opportunities to take advantage of during college. As students explore new places and experience new cultures, they gain a better understanding of themselves and the world. The financial support from Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation (Fallen Patriots) makes it possible for scholarship recipients (military children who have lost a parent in the line of duty) to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Here are some of the reasons why you don’t want to miss this chance:
See the world
The world is a big, beautiful place begging to be explored by curious travelers. When you step outside of your comfort zone, you open your eyes to new possibilities. When you say yes to things that scare you, you become braver. Consider taking a leap of faith and traveling now while you are young and free.
Learn a new language
Many students studying a foreign language choose to study abroad for the opportunity to immerse themselves in language’s culture. This presents a great, non-stop, learning experience to practice daily and become fluent faster.
Make international friends
One of the best reasons to study abroad is to develop friendships with people from all around the world. The international students are oftentimes kept together, which is helpful because you are never alone in navigating life in a new country. Your new friends will help expose you to incredible new foods, customs, and traditions.
Personal development
Students who have studied abroad say the experience changed them. “I had the privilege of Fallen Patriots funding my study abroad trip to London in 2017,” shared Madison R., daughter of fallen U.S. Army soldier Kenneth R.. “If it was not for Fallen Patriots making London a possibility for me financially, I would not be the person I am today.” Madison described her time abroad as vulnerable, exciting, and humbling all at once. “It has undoubtedly given me the confidence to push myself socially, academically and in my career.”
If studying abroad is on your bucket list, please contact Fallen Patriots to see how we can help, too. We believe a college education is the single most important gift we can give children of fallen patriots.
