For many Americans, Memorial Day weekend was about backyard barbecues, but for participants of the third annual "500 for the Fallen" relay, there was a singular purpose – to honor the children of fallen service members along the 500-mile route from Concord, Mass., to Arlington National Cemetery.
Leo McGonagle and his team of three other runners took ahold of an American flag from Sarah B. Winch and Lance Svendsen at the Capt. Parker Statue on the corner of Lexington Battle Green just after 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
Memorial Day is a time to remember those who have died serving America. Some decorate military cemeteries. Others visit the graves of the fallen and stand in silent salute. For others, it's time for the beach or barbecue.
