11 Days of Remembrance — Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation

Veterans Day is upon us. It’s a time to be thankful for the sacrifices of past, present and future veterans.

Headquartered in Jacksonville Beach, is a non-profit foundation enriching the lives of children whose parents were killed serving our country. Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation‘s mission is to provide college scholarships and educational counseling to military children who have lost a parent in the line of duty. Since 2002, they have provided $9.9 million in college scholarships.

For the days leading up to Veterans Day, Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation (Fallen Patriots) is featuring a different military family each day who have shared their compassionate and heart-felt family activities around Veterans Day as they reflect on memories with their lost loved ones. 11 Days of Remembrance honors not only the fallen soldier, but also the family who has been left behind. The children of these families are enrolled in Fallen Patriots’ program, which will help bridge the gap in funding a college education.

Remembrance is at the forefront of our national consciousness, with sacrifices continuing to be made every day as we lose brave soldiers.

According to a study by the Lucas Group, Nearly 20,000 dependents have been left behind by troops killed in the line of military duty over the past 35 years. Many surviving families struggle to make ends meet with 60 percent of surviving spouses making less than $50,000 per year. Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation works to find each and every one of these children and with the intent to give them the future they deserve.

Each year when this important day of remembrance occurs, it’s essential to also remember the thousands of men and women, who fought and died nearly 75 years ago in a World War. Without their sacrifice and the continued patriotism today, the face of the world we live in wouldn’t exist.

President Woodrow Wilson issued the following proclamation on November 11, 1919, with these words, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations …”

It wasn’t until 1938, that a legal holiday was actually officially voted into law, known as “Veterans Day.”
